Why You're Uncomfortable in Your Comfort Zone
Posted on May 04 2015
I recently had a conversation with a friend who has been unhappy at her job for quite some time. The pay is low, the work is never ending and worst of all, she feels uninspired. Her story is one that I’m very familiar with. Everyday, I meet people who are overworked, underpaid and worst of all feel stuck in their current situation. I came across a survey a few weeks ago that reported that 80% of people are dissatisfied with their jobs (Deloitte’s Shift Index survey). That same survey mentioned that 25% of employees say work is their main source of stress and 40% say their job is “very or extremely stressful.”
These numbers weirdly make sense to me. They make sense to me because the common thread that exists between every single person that I meet through my job is the need for change.
As my friend tries to break out of her uninspiring cycle, she constantly wishes that one day, her pay will become commensurate with the amount of work she’s putting into the company. Everytime she tells me of her wish, I tell her that it will never happen. “That’s harsh” she says. ‘'Harsh but true.“ I respond. I don’t believe in mediocrity for you and neither does Life.
Making more money at a job that is uninspiring doesn’t make that job more inspiring. You’re still wasting away your potential. If my friend woke up tomorrow and was given a raise, her life would be a little bit more comfortable but she would also become complacent. The fight and fire that she currently possesses to move forward and change her life would instead become a dim light.
There’s a reason why you’re currently uncomfortable in your comfort zone. It’s Life’s way of telling you that you’ve got more in you. It’s Life’s way of telling you to push forward because you’re capable of so much more. Don’t you dare settle for a mediocre or comfortable existence when you can achieve the extraordinary. It may take a while and you will definitely have some push back but it is very much within your reach.
As we begin a new month, it’s time to take stock of where you currently are. Have you lost that fire to push forward and strive for the best? Are you constantly upset that you are not thriving in a mediocre situation? Trust me, you don’t want more comfort in your comfort zone. Push forward, strive harder, you are not meant to be where you are forever. One thing that is a given about Life is that it is constantly changing. In big ways and in little ways, it’s changing.
Life is also filled with many, many steps, each one molding and shaping us for the next. Your current situation is there to prepare you for the next step and most importantly to ensure that you are living at your highest potential. Embrace your discomfort and let it drive you to inspired action. We all deserve to be valued and to receive value from the things we spend our time on. We have a birthright to happiness and that includes being happy at our jobs. I mean, we’re only going to spend 90,000 hours at work over our lifetime.
